Mortal Shell Review

One of the projects that sparked our interest in its world and its idea at the beginning of the year is Mortal Shell from the Cold Symmetry development team, this game is one of the action and RPG games similar to the Souls series that has the boldness to present its own ideas and after our experience with the beta was encouraging, it is time to share with you about The experience provided by the game in its full version through this review.

The story takes us to a shattered and dreary world and puts you in the role of an entity capable of wearing the bodies of warriors hence the name of the game and it is no wonder that the story is not a major component of the experience as is usual with genre games, the worlds in Mortal Shell are interesting with their designs and ideas, and we liked the artistic direction of the development team and its innovation In the design of some enemies, the technical level was uneven, some areas look good and polished, while some other areas appear with somewhat blurry graphics and details and maybe annoying at times, especially in the main area in the game Fall grim, on the auditory level, the game, like many of its similes, is satisfied with some custom melodies Confrontations with leaders, and there is nothing special in this regard.

Speaking of gameplay, Mortal Shell offers the usual control system of movement, burst or roll to avoid attacks, as well as a button for light and heavy attacks with a button to repel attacks at the appropriate moments, but the difference is in the ability to "ossify" as you cannot defend using shields, but you transform To a stone statue, which prevents you from receiving damage from opponents' attacks and paralyzes the movements of those opponents for a few seconds, which provides you with a window to perform a counterattack. This ability without planning, it can be used every few seconds, and the hurry to use it may leave you vulnerable to fatal blows, as many of the opponents in this game are characterized by speed or wide-range attacks that will put you in trouble.

Losing the health meter does not mean death directly, as your character will be expelled from the warrior you wear, and then you must return to the body of the warrior before you are eliminated because the main character will die with one blow from the weakest enemy and you have only one chance to return to the body of your warrior and lose the health meter For the second time it means death, blocking attacks at the last minute. Parry enables you to perform a special attack that will cause additional damage while filling up a portion of your health meter. The game offers 4 different warriors, each of whom is distinguished from the other in terms of a health meter, stamina, or "determination" It is a counter that is filled by directing damage to opponents and allows you to carry out some special attacks of the weapon used, and it is also used to block in the last moments as well. The diversity of characters is good and serves different playing styles, but we see that the game needs some balance in terms of the endurance counter, it is filling slowly, and that some warriors consume it at an unreasonable speed that makes playing with their use annoying.

The game offers 4 weapons that differ in the period they cover, as each weapon offers two different types of special attacks, and the variety offered by the weapons is excellent, the upgrade system in the game is somewhat different from similar games, so upgrading weapons does not include increasing their power, but also activating their own capabilities as you are You must find a specific purpose to activate these abilities. Regarding warriors, every warrior is distinguished by his abilities as mentioned, and to upgrade the warrior, you must first get to know the name of the warrior by visiting Zester Geneses, who is your guide on this trip, for which you will pay the used currency “Tar” to know the name of the warrior and then start With his promotion, the upgrade is not based on the Tar only, but on a second coin also known as Glimpses, which is a currency you gain from defeating usually strong enemies, as it can be obtained through some tools.

Unlike other games, you do not have a specific purpose to refill the health meter, and you have to take advantage of the resources provided by the game world and the game encourages you to use anything you find in its world. Any new purpose you will get you will not know what its job is unless you use it and whenever you use a specific object, the more you become familiar with it, and after a certain number of uses, this purpose will become more efficient. The mushroom, for example, will fill the health meter more quickly, while Tar sources will give you more of this currency when using it, and this system changes your entire approach to resource use and makes you focus on a period Knowing what you own rather than focusing on the number.

Speaking of difficulty, Mortal Shell is a balanced experience in general, and it can be said that it is of medium difficulty compared to other games of the genre. What the game offers you in terms of capabilities such as ossification and special attacks makes you ready to face any challenge that stands in your way, as most of the enemies and even the bosses follow a simple attack pattern and after confronting or Two confrontations with any enemy you will become aware of the danger that that enemy poses and what its attacks are, and we found the leaders' confrontations a bit frustrating as they did not present the challenge we wanted in the end, but it will be a very fair experience, especially for newcomers.

The game does not offer any side zones, but the areas you will visit are complex enough to make you spend some time exploring and searching for secrets and some optional boss confrontations may attract your attention, 14 hours was enough to finish the experiment and the development team has already mentioned that it is not a long game The other type, which explains its sale at half the full price, Mortal Shell offers a new and familiar experience at the same time as it adheres to the basics of games similar to the Souls series, but at the same time offers many of its own ideas that distinguish it from other such games, it is a fun, weighted and suitable experience for newcomers It can be said that it is a good experience for genre games, but it is not the most challenging or test of your skills.
